Baba Nanak Public holiday in Punjab .

By Manmohan Singh

Sardar Ramesh Singh, the first Sikh member of the Punjab Assembly Lahore, tabled a motion that a public holiday be declared in the Punjab on the birthday of Baba Guru Nanak. The Assembly approved the resolution . Sardar Ramesh Singh is a member of Pakistan Muslim league party ( PML-N).

There is a public holiday in Sheikhpura district every year on the birth anniversary of the Guru.

Guru Nanak is the son of the Punjab and his poetry is unparalleled in the world just like Baba Sheikh Farid .

In the UK, Shakespeare is adorned for his poetic works and his birth place in Strafford attracts tourists from all over the world throughout the year. Such is the respect for their literary figure which is not appreciated by our people or if it is, it is not given the publicity it deserves.

It would be befitting tribute to Baba Nanak if this resolution is implemented and in fact more needs to be done to publish about Nanakana Sahib , the birth place of the Guru so that people from all over the world can visit his birthplace whether they are Sikhs or non Sikhs. It can only bring more revenue to the Pakistan Government from the tourists.

It is worth noting that the Government of Pakistan had commissioned the setting up of Baba Nanak University at Nankana Sahib ( click University icon on the Homepage ) and allocated 2500 acres for the project. The project still needs to be implemented .

Similarly the road from Lahore to Nanakana Sahib needs to be named Baba Nanak Highway . Sardar Ramesh Singh’s presence in the Punjab Assembly will be very helpful to the Sikh cause particularly when there is overwhelming support from the Pakistani Punjabis on any Sikh issue . Nawaz Sharif himself hails from Patiala during the undivided Punjab and the Sikhs enjoy the goodwill of the people and the government of Punjab.

Pakistan Parbandhak Committee has played its own role and continues to do so in looking after of the Sikh Gurudwaras in Pakistan.
